Jennings holds a reputation for being a BIG catfish producer, and is one of a minority of San Diego County lakes that contains the larger Blue Catfish. Every year several cats over 15 lbs. are reported, especially during the summer night fishing season. Mackerel and chicken-livers are not-surprisingly the top producers, but any stink bait works in the shallows at night for the nocturnal feeders.

lakejenningsA boater obeys the speed limit at Lake JenningsThousands of pounds of channel catfish are stocked from June to August during the summer, so when the big-un's aren't biting there's always something close.

Jennings is also a quality trout fishery during the winter months when the lake is constantly stocked with 1200 lb. loads of rainbow trout. Nightcrawlers, powerbait and lures on light line are almost always a sure thing. Shore fishing is exceptionally good at this lake with several coves, drop-offs, points and docks to try.

While not as popular a target due to constant catfish and trout plants, but Jennings does hold some monster bass and produces promising numbers throughout the year.

Ranger Hugh Marx has put together one of the most outstanding tools available to a fisherman looking at Lake Jennings - a GPS Guide complete with photos and GPS coordinates of all of the good fishing locations on the lake. Click here to check it out.

Lake Jennings is located 5 miles east of El Cajon in the hills above Lakeside. Take I-8 east to Lake Jennings Park Rd, turn left, then right onto Harritt Road. Where Harritt Rd. divides go right to the south entrance on Bass Dr.

History

The dam at Lake Jennings was built in 1964 to create a reservoir for the local residents of Lakeside around the lake and down the hill. A water treatment facility next to the lake reminds us that the lake is ultimately there to provide fresh drinking water and not just a place to relax and enjoy a day of fishing.

The lake has approximately 85 surface acres and lies at an altitude of 700 ft. above sea level. The park surrounding the lake takes up approximately 100 acres and contains a large campground and hiking trails.

Facilities & Camping Information

lakejennings3View of the lake from a prime campground spotLake Jennings boasts one of the most complete bait and tackle stores in the county, in a time when few are offered at all. The concession includes food and snacks as well as bait and fishing tackle.

The campground is located in a shady and quiet area slightly above the lake giving campers an elevated view of the water. There are 28 campsites with full hook-ups for trailers and RV's up to 35 ft., 35 sites with partial hook-ups for vehicles up to 25 ft., 6 secluded sites for tents only, and 20 for small campers and tents only. Restrooms, hot showers, laundry tubs, a playground, fish-cleaning facility, and pump station are within short walk of any campsite. There are several hiking trails around the lake that lead to and from the campground.

Hours, Fees & Boating Information

Lake Jennings is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 16 foot Carolina Skiff flat-bottom motor and row boats are available. Motor boats are equipped with 4 or 6 horsepower Yamaha four-stroke outboards. This is probably the nicest rental boat fleet in the county.

A weekly fishing class, the Lake Jennings Fishing University is offered every Sunday at 1 pm. Ranger Hugh Marx conducts classes that cover what is working best for all the species of fish in the lake. Check-in at the Lake Jennings Bait & Tackle Shop. Classes are free.

When Ranger Hugh Marx left Lake Cuyamaca to take over operations at Lake Jennings it instantly gave the small clearwater reservoir in Lakeside credibility among the top fishermen in the county. Hugh is arguably the most respected person working with a lake here in town. Hes taken a relatively featureless trout lake and turned it into a viable fishery for all species. Hes dug trenches, installed fish habitats, created hard bottom structure in an otherwise soft bottomed lake AND noted the GPS coordinates of every one of those improvements and made them available to anglers on Lake Jennings' website. No other lake, with exception to Cuyamaca (which Hugh was responsible for while he was there) has such a resource available.

The bass fishing is limited, but can be very, very good. Some of my best fishing days in 2010 were at Jennings. There is almost always a good drop shot bite if you find the feeding fish, and when the water dirties up, as it does sometimes there, you can experience a fantastic reaction bait bite. The bass are relatively left at peace, so when they're biting you can have the bite to yourself for the most part.

The catfishing at Jennings is very good. The only reason I didn't give it 5 out of 5 stars is because it hasn't kicked out a truly giant fish yet. But with the trout plants and a growing population of blue catfish, that will surely change. Rick Guseman, one of, if not the best catfish fishermen in San Diego frequents Lake Jennings. That should tell you all you need to know about the quality of catfish fishing at Jennings.

The trout fishing is even better. Hugh stocks the lake frequently and steadily in the winter with Mt. Lassen Sierra Bows. I was very tempted to give it 5 stars, but backed off a bit just for the fact that some traditional trout fishing styles are not ideal at Jennings, namely fly fishing. While I'm sure it can be done effectively, you're not going to forget you're fishing in San Diego and mistaken it for Montana. Realistically though, only Cuyamaca can even come close to making that comparison. So, for the traditional San Diego style of trout fishing, Jennings might be the best thing going right now. Hugh and his staff make it even better by keeping such an accurate gauge on the fishery, so you'll get all the intel you need while you're buying your daily fishing permit.

The concessions are great, along with Santee Lakes are probably the best in the county. They're a reminder of what the city lakes used to be, hopefully all the lakes will get back to that at some point.

The lake is located very conveniently within a mile or so of Interstate 8. There is an accessible paved road going nearly all the way around the lake to get you right to almost any spot along the shoreline.

The launch ramp is great, but doesn't have a lot of parking. A few boats on the lake will fill up the lower parking area, and then its a steep walk up and down to the upper lot. The water level is very stable, so the launch ramp is always available. Its very easy to launch at Jennings, with a steady decline, a nice courtesy dock and a straight shot down the evenly paved ramp.

The rental fleet is top notch, made up of very well maintained Carolina Skiffs and Yamaha Four Stroke outboards. The only thing that would make this rental fleet any better is the addition of electric trolling motors.

Jennings is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Being open only 3 out of 7 days knocks them down a bit in that department, but that leaves Hugh and his staff a few days per week to improve the lake. And they're not wasting any of that time at Jennings.

This is the most improved fishery in the county, and its only getting better.

Good lake overall. Killer trout fishing in winter, ok catfishing in summer. Bass are a hit or miss. They say that there are some crappie but i have never seen or heard of anyone catching one. Bluegill are mostly only a couple inches, Redear fishing can be awesome if you hit it in the right time of year.
